Kenkävero

Experience the extraordinary atmosphere of the old parsonage milieu, immerse yourself into traditional handicrafts and see the flowers in the garden in all their splendour.

Located in Mikkeli, on the shores of Lake Saimaa, the meticulously restored parsonage milieu of Kenkävero
introduces visitors to handicrafts and applied art exhibitions, allows them to purchase products from the well-stocked shop as well as enjoy lunch or dinner at the Parsonage Restaurant. In the summer when the flowers are in full bloom, you can admire more than five hundred species of plant in the famous parsonage garden, or even go on a cruise on Lake Saimaa that departs from the parsonage's jetty.

There are several explanations for the origin of the name Kenkävero (“Shoe tax”). According to one story, people from Savonia would stop on the Kenkävero Island to put on their finer shoes when going to church and take them off again on the way home. Another story insists that the name originates from the time of the Cudgel War, when Savonian men, armed with cudgels, were tricked into surrendering on yard of the Kenkäveronniemi parsonage. The name may also be related to the salary of a precentor: each year, the pastor was obliged to give the precentor a pair of shoes and woollen socks as payment for delivering the letters of the chapter.
