Steamships with white broadsides and the blue Lake Saimaa – steamship nostalgia at its best.

One beautiful summer evening in Savonlinna in 1903, ship designer Eemil Kiiveri was still pondering about his latest problematic commission. He was to design a ship that would have the capacity to transport all the inhabitants of a single cooperative to church and to the market square. At the same time, the low-energy ship should be able to navigate through difficult passages, such as shallows and frozen lakes. The engine had already been designed, and the hull would be made from 7.5 mm thick Siemens black steel. "It is easy to work with, hammer into shape and rivet together. It is in a league of its own in terms of durability," thought Eemil. The hull of the ship was to be long and round to ensure smooth sailing. Saloons would be placed on three different floors so that the peasants and the gentry do not run into each other on board. A sun deck would provide a degree of respectability when enjoying the fine weather. Building the ship could perhaps begin already this summer. Eemil turned his gaze away from the lake set ablaze by the setting sun, turned back to his paper and began to draw...
